Listening Session: Voting Processes (ASL-interpreted)

October 9 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm
Free
Join in on a listening session where Commissioner Jackie Ortiz and Commissioner Peter Elder from the Monroe County Board of Elections (BOE), will be presenting on Voting process and bilingual inspectors but more importantly, they will be listening to the LEP (Limited English Proficiency) and Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities and their voting experiences to hopefully learn and make improvements to the process.  *This is your chance to share ideas/thoughts and maybe your own experiences with the voting process.
The BOE has requested that we open this space to all public, so we have created a dedicated Zoom link that will require participant registration: https://ibero-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/k5Z6Tw45Q2W5dizIgu7c8A

Your Vote, Your Language, Your Voice
A community forum on bilingual election inspectors and the voting process – open to all Monroe County residents.
Date: Friday, October 9
Time: 1:00PM – 2:30PM
Where: Virtual – via Zoom
What We’ll Cover
  • What a bilingual election inspector is, and how the role supports voters at the polls
  • Requirements for language access at polling sites under New York State’s Voting Rights Act
  • An open floor for community members to raise questions or concerns about the voting process

Guest speakers:

Monroe County Board of Elections Commissioners Jackie Ortiz and Peter Elder will join us to speak directly on bilingual inspectors and voter access.

A representative from the New York State Attorney General’s Office and regular participant in MCLAC (Monroe County Language Access Committee) monthly meetings, will also be present.

This is a conversation on voting access, not a political debate.  We’re here to talk how the voting process works and how it can work better for Limited English Proficient and Deaf community members.

MCLAC is the only coalition in New York State advocating for both Limited English Proficient and Deaf communities.  All are welcome to attend.  ASL Interpreters will be present.

Questions?  Camila & Marlene: MCLAC Co-Leads  ibero.language@iaal.org
