  • Curious about how emerging genetic technologies may shape the future of deafness, Deaf identity, and ASL communities? Join Dr. Ayers for the presentation as she explores the biological foundation of gene therapy and gene editing, and what these technologies are designed to do, and their potential implications for deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. This event is free and open to the public. Editing Deaf Genes: Biological Perspectives The presentation will examine the ongoing OTOF gene therapy clinical trial in children and the more widely known Connexin-26 mutation, which is associated with deafness while also providing protection against certain diseases. Additional topics include Deaf Gain and neuroplasticity with neuroscience research demonstrating that ASL and spoken language activate equivalent brain networks. Participants are invited to consider how scientific advances may influence identity, autonomy, and the future of Deaf communities. Building on Dr. Mazique's interdisciplinary perspective from the first session in the series, this presentation supports a shared goal: ensuring that Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people have access to clear information and a meaningful voice in conversations about genetic technologies designed to eliminate deafness.
